Au début du XXe siècle, les migrants yoruba, originaires des villes rattachées à l'ancien royaume d'Oyo au Nigeria, sont considérés dans tout l'Ouest africain comme d'habiles commerçants. A la veille des indépendances, quelques-uns se risquent dans une nouvelle voie et s'installent comme photographes dans des villes comme Niamey au Niger voisin ou Abidjan en Côte d'Ivoire, où la demande est réelle, mais l'offre très limitée. D'autres vont rapidement leur emboîter le pas lorsqu'ils constatent que les amateurs de portraits sont toujours plus nombreux. La dynamique s'enclenche et s'étend rapidement au réseau yoruba tout entier. L'âge d'or de la photographie de studio (1960-1980) consacre leur maîtrise professionnelle, notamment dans les travaux de laboratoire noir et blanc. Dans les associations de photographes, ils sont aussi très présents, reconnus pour leurs compétences. A partir des années 1980, dans un contexte de crise économique, ils forment de plus en plus d'autochtones qui, menacés par le chômage, commencent à se tourner vers une profession jusque-là ignorée. Cet ouvrage aborde un sujet peu connu et peu étudié, celui du métier de photographe en Afrique de l'Ouest, un métier en pleine évolution, dont le savoir-faire et les productions constituent un héritage précieux qui documente l'histoire contemporaine de l'Afrique et qu'il est urgent de préserver.
